A Treasure Trove of Silly Sports Team Names

Banana Slugs. Not quite as weird as Oyster Martyrs.

Banana Slugs. Not quite as weird as Oyster Martyrs.

If you thought the names of sports teams could get no sillier than the likes of the Utah Jazz, the U.C. Santa Cruz Banana Slugs, or Sheffield Wednesday, you thought wrong. For evidence, we turn to jolly old England, home of the aforementioned soccer club from Sheffield with the odd moniker. Specifically, we turn to the FA Sunday Cup, which appears to be a national competition for the soccer equivalent of keg softball teams.

Some of the competitors still standing in the illustrious tournament include “Fforde Grene Brazil” (how does one pronounce that double f?), “Oyster Martyrs” (huh?), “Lebeq Tavern Courage” (my guess is the tavern supplies plenty of courage to the lads in question), and “Canada” (wrong country, guys).

Some of the teams already eliminated include “Lobster FC” (I wonder what would happen if they met Oyster Martyrs. Sushi, perhaps?), “The View” (I had no idea Barbara Walters was in this thing), “Obiter Fabs 4” (do they write the obituaries whenever one of The Beatles dies?), “Dawdon Collier Welfare” (Is this a team of miners or civil servants? Or miners who moonlight as civil servants? Or civil servants who moonlight as miners?), “Coundon Conservative” (does this describe their style of play or their political alignment?), and “Plough Barfly’s” (at least they have no illusions about who they are).
