In the last few days, this little corner of the Internets has been receiving a disproportionate number of hits from search engine terms like “Premier League Standings Widget,” “Premier League table widgets,” “mac premier league tables widget,” “soccer table widget mac,” and so on. Then again, it also got a hit the other day from somebody searching for “BELGIUM UP SHIT CREEK” . . .
Anyway, my point is that in an earlier post, I alluded to a Dashboard widget I have on my Macintosh computer that tells me the current standings of the Barclay’s Premier League of English soccer teams. I never mentioned where you can find it, so I figured I’d better remedy that situation now in case you came here looking for it, as it appears some people have.
It’s called the Soccer DB Widget, and it is listed at this link under Apple’s directory of Dashboard widget downloads: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/sports/soccerdbwidget.html. It is also downloadable directly from the developer here: http://www.mbovin.com/soccerdb/site/dashboard.php. As far as computers go, it’s Macintosh-only; there isn’t a version for Microsoft Windows, but there are versions available for handheld devices running PocketPC or PalmOS here: http://www.mbovin.com/teamstats/index.php.
The thing is a bit niftier than I let on earlier. It doesn’t just handle the Premiership, or for that matter just English results. You can configure it to list results and tables of any one of 84 leagues from 67 different countries. Want England’s Championship League instead? It can do that. New Zealand’s NZFC? It can do that, too. Peru’s Primera Division Clausura and Primera Division Apertura? Ditto and ditto. The Luxembourg National Division? Yup. The League of Wales? Yepper. Malaysia’s Super League and Premier League? You get the picture: international soccer standings overkill. It also lists upcoming games and recent scores for each league by day.
The whole thing works by pulling results from an online database of results located at http://www.mbovin.com/soccerdb/. To top it off, the site’s collaborative; anyone can submit results to it by going here: http://www.mbovin.com/soccerdb/site/missing.php and filling in anything they know.
To quote the site, “Can I really edit the results? Yes, you can. Anyone can edit the results on this site. The purpose of this is to make results available as quickly as possible and also not to be dependent on a single person to keep things updated. For this site to stay alive everybody needs to help out with updating. So if you like this site then please take some time to update the results if you find something missing or if you find an incorrect result. Thanks.”
It’s not a bad idea, and it seems to be working well.
